Phase 1 of the redevelopment at the Marine Biological Association on Citadel Hill, Plymouth, focused on upgrading facilities to support advanced marine research. The project included demolishing and reconstructing the lean-to extension, refurbishing multiple floors, and updating the southwest ground floor area. These enhancements provide MBA staff with modern, state-of-the-art laboratory spaces designed to accommodate cutting-edge research into oceanic environmental changes.
This project required strict adherence to the Employer’s Requirements, statutory regulations, and planning conditions while respecting the site’s historical significance as a Scheduled Monument. Key works included controlled demolition, construction of a rear extension with a single-storey steel staircase for improved accessibility, and significant laboratory refurbishments. Upgrades encompassed new linings, walls, doors, and finishes, creating a functional and modern research environment. Comprehensive MEP upgrades included a new air conditioning system for optimal lab conditions and a highly efficient water source heat pump, ensuring sustainable energy use. This approach delivered state-of-the-art facilities supporting advanced marine research.
The redevelopment of the North Labs enhances the Marine Biological Association’s research capabilities, enabling it to lead in marine biology and the study of environmental change. By modernising these facilities, the MBA can support ocean conservation while fostering public engagement through educational and outreach opportunities. The project boosts local economic development by employing regional contractors and attracting top-tier researchers and collaborative projects to Plymouth. Achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, the project demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability, seamlessly integrating heritage preservation with modern scientific needs.
