Historic Refurbishment | Commercial | RNLI | 73 Weeks | £2.1M
Located within the original 1800s lifeboat station, the project transformed a historic waterfront building into a modern, fully operational facility to support the RNLI’s lifesaving work.
The completed station includes a purpose-built boathall for the D class lifeboat, first floor crew training space, offices, welfare facilities, and dedicated changing and kit storage areas. The new facility replaces the previous Coronation Park station, which was constrained by limited space and challenging launch arrangements.
Working within a sensitive historic building and a highly constrained waterfront site required careful planning and close collaboration. A phased and controlled construction strategy was adopted to manage complex logistics and maintain safe access throughout the programme.
We worked closely with the RNLI, design team and neighbouring stakeholders to coordinate works within tight boundaries. The refurbishment balanced modern operational requirements with respect for the building’s heritage, ensuring the new extension and internal layouts integrated seamlessly with the existing structure and surrounding environment.
The new Dart RNLI Lifeboat Station provides a significant upgrade for the volunteer crew, improving operational readiness, training and welfare. Housing the D class lifeboat within a dedicated boathall removes the need to transport the lifeboat across public space, improving response efficiency and safety.
The new facility resolves long-standing space limitations and provides a fit-for-purpose environment for the RNLI’s volunteers. Carefully delivered within a sensitive waterfront location, the station represents a long-term investment in lifesaving capability for the Dartmouth area.
