Dartmoor Building

New Build   |   Healthcare   |   NHS   |   72 Weeks   |   £38M

Project Overview

The Dartmoor Building at Derriford Hospital is one of Plymouth’s most significant healthcare investments in recent years. Developed to improve urgent and emergency care, the scheme brings together an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), Fracture Clinic, and Outpatient Department within a purpose-built facility. The building provides a modern, patient-focused environment, designed to support both immediate care needs and the hospital’s long-term strategy for emergency and outpatient provision.

Our Approach

Delivered in just 18 months, the Dartmoor Building demanded close collaboration between our team, the NHS Trust, clinical teams, and design partners. The programme was shaped around evolving requirements, multiple funding streams, and overlapping timelines for different departments.

Regular workshops ensured clinical needs informed design decisions, while adaptability on-site allowed plans to adjust in real time to meet NHS targets. Key focus was placed on staff wellbeing, with rest, education, and training spaces built into the scheme. Despite complex logistics, the project maintained its central aim: delivering a safe, efficient, and future-proof clinical environment.

Impact

The new building provides modern treatment rooms, on-site X-ray, and improved patient flow to reduce waiting times and relieve pressure on Derriford’s emergency department. Staff now benefit from dedicated workspaces and facilities, supporting morale and efficiency.

The Dartmoor Building now functions as a hub for urgent care, fracture treatment, and outpatient services, serving around 100 patients daily. By co-locating services in a single facility, the project will help Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust meet four-hour emergency care targets, surgery timescales, and outpatient waiting list reductions. Its completion sets a new benchmark for healthcare delivery in the region.
