This development included the construction and fit-out of a modern, purpose-built facility tailored to enhance neuro-rehabilitation services. Featuring 15 bed spaces (7 with private en-suites), therapy and consulting rooms, two gyms, an audiology pod, a therapy kitchen, patient utility and laundry areas, and a secure patient garden. Designed to offer a community-focused environment, the unit integrates specialist treatment spaces with comfortable, patient-centred living facilities, setting a new standard in regional neuro-rehabilitation care.
To deliver the Plym Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, we adopted a phased construction plan to minimise disruption within the live hospital environment. The works included refurbishing the upper floor for outpatient care, installing an audiology pod, and redeveloping the ground floor for neuro-rehabilitation services.
We used innovative methods, such as an ex-vac machine for precise excavation in restricted areas, and coordinated utility shutdowns during out-of-hours periods to ensure uninterrupted hospital operations. Collaborating closely with Livewell Southwest, we tailored pre-designed features, including wheelchair-accessible facilities and overhead hoisting systems, to meet the specific needs of neuro-rehabilitation patients.
The new Plym Neurological Rehabilitation Unit has revolutionised care for patients in Devon and Cornwall, offering a modern, spacious facility designed to support recovery and independence. With seven en-suite single rooms, enhanced therapy spaces, and a discharge preparation room, the unit promotes privacy, skill-building, and a smoother transition to independent living.
Increased capacity and improved infection control measures enable faster admissions and better patient outcomes. By creating a tailored environment for patients and staff, the unit sets a new standard for neuro-rehabilitation, benefiting both patients and their families.
