The £13.5 million Bigbury Orthopaedic Surgical Suite, located on Level 2 of Derriford Hospital, transformed former hospital kitchens into a state-of-the-art orthopaedic surgical facility. The suite includes three advanced operating theatres designed for orthopaedic procedures, nine recovery rooms for post-operative care, and ancillary spaces such as theatre stores, medical staff offices, and staff rest areas. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, including an Ultra Clean Ventilation (UCV) system and air source heat pumps, the facility ensures superior air quality and energy efficiency.
This project required precise coordination and innovative management, as it was located in one of the hospital’s busiest areas, which remained fully operational throughout. Strategic scheduling and careful planning ensured minimal disruption to daily activities while adapting to evolving needs.
The installation of advanced mechanical and electrical systems in a live hospital environment posed challenges, but innovative techniques allowed us to maintain essential services without interruption. By addressing logistical complexities and prioritising safety and efficiency, we delivered a fully modernised and functional space that met the hospital’s requirements while supporting continuous patient care.
The Bigbury Orthopaedic Surgical Suite has transformed Derriford Hospital’s ability to provide essential orthopaedic care. With increased capacity, the suite allows for a higher volume of surgeries, reducing waiting times and improving access to treatment for patients.
The introduction of the Bigbury Orthopaedic Surgical Suite has greatly enhanced our capacity for orthopaedic surgery, including hip and knee replacements. This state-of-the-art surgical unit, combined with our improved patient pathways, will allow us to perform a higher volume of procedures each day, thereby reducing waiting times and significantly improving access to essential orthopaedic care for our patients.
