CT Imaging Refurbishment

Refurbishment  Healthcare  |   NHS   12 Weeks  |  £650K

Project Overview

The refurbishment of the CT Imaging Suite at Derriford Hospital was undertaken to support increased clinical demand and replace a 20-year-old scanner. The project involved the full strip-out and reconfiguration of internal spaces, including demolition and repositioning of walls to expand clinical capacity. Structural steel supports were installed at ceiling level, and the entire suite was encapsulated with lead-lined radiation protection. New M&E systems, specialist air conditioning, lighting controls, and mood-enhancing finishes were integrated to create a safe, functional, and modern diagnostic environment.

Our Approach

Following the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Higher Risk Buildings regulations in October 2023, this scheme became the Trust’s first project to progress through the new HRB gateway process. Our team worked closely with the Trust and the appointed consultant team to ensure full compliance with the new regulatory requirements.

We led the Gateway 2 submission, coordinating detailed design compliance, construction control, information management and the change control strategy in line with golden thread principles. The focus was on producing a clear and regulator ready suite of information to support validation and assessment.

During the approval period, statutory review timescales were managed collaboratively with the Trust, with programme adjustments agreed to reflect the approval process. On completion, a Gateway 3 submission was made, including full as installed information and a complete change control record. The Trust confirmed that the nature of the space meant occupation was not delayed, allowing the facility to be brought into use with confidence.

Impact

The completed suite delivers a high-performance clinical environment equipped to meet growing diagnostic needs. The quality of finish and functionality of the space have been praised by the imaging department, who now benefit from enhanced workflow, reduced turnaround times, and improved patient comfort.

All works were completed using local trades and suppliers, with over sixty individuals involved across the programme. An apprentice floor layer supported delivery, and sustainability was achieved through LED lighting, remote DTM meetings, and comprehensive waste recycling. The facility now plays a key role in the hospital’s imaging service, providing long-term value to the Trust and community.
