Children’s Emergency Department Officially Opens

A new area for children and young people needing urgent medical attention has opened at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E)—and we’re delighted to have delivered this vital addition. The Children’s Emergency Department (ED) area and Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) provide a calm, separate waiting space and purpose-built clinical facilities, designed to put young patients at ease.

Children and families arriving at the hospital can now benefit from:

  • A dedicated ED with an environment focused on reducing stress
  • Ocean-themed decor and interactive digital equipment to help distract from clinical procedures
  • Comfortable seating—complete with USB charging points—to keep families connected

This transformation was backed by incredible community support. Local fundraising efforts have helped cover extra features that go beyond the standard NHS provision, such as the eye-catching wall murals and innovative light panels. By bringing these uplifting touches to the new facility, the charity has helped set a new benchmark for children’s emergency care.

It’s estimated this new area will treat up to 30,000 paediatric emergencies every year. Hospital staff note that having a dedicated, child-friendly zone helps reduce anxiety and streamlines the overall patient journey. Separate from the main Emergency Department, youngsters now receive care in a calmer setting away from the usual hospital bustle.

Part of a Larger Transformation

This opening marks the final phase of a comprehensive upgrade to the RD&E’s Emergency Department. Since 2022, the Trust has introduced a new main entrance, expanded waiting areas, redesigned ambulance bays, and added multiple resuscitation rooms, plus other essential improvements. Our team at Nevada Construction worked closely with hospital personnel to ensure the transformation happened smoothly and safely, all while day-to-day operations continued.

The hospital’s charity has been instrumental in making the Children’s ED and PAU feel less clinical and more engaging. They continue to raise funds, with only a small amount left to reach their £200,000 goal for enhancing paediatric facilities. Their attention now turns to the next challenge—a new state-of-the-art operating theatre—ensuring progress in local healthcare doesn’t stop here.

Looking Ahead

We’re proud to have played our part in creating a facility that offers improved care for Devon’s youngest patients. By combining thoughtful design with strong community backing, the Children’s ED and PAU stand ready to serve families across the region for years to come.
