A Day at Tinside Lido – Green & Blue Economies

Today, Team Nevada is making a splash at Tinside Lido, celebrating The Big Splash 2024! We’re here to inspire young minds and explore careers in Plymouth’s burgeoning green and blue economies.

A Day of Inspiration and Learning

The Big Splash 2024, a collaborative effort by Skills Launchpad Plymouth and Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, is a unique event designed to engage young people with the vibrant career opportunities in Plymouth’s environmental and marine sectors. Held on Wednesday 10 July, this event is tailored for secondary schools and youth groups, offering them an immersive experience right by Plymouth’s stunning waterfront.

Hands-On Activities with Local Employers

Funded by the Youth Investment Fund, The Big Splash brings together local employers, including Thales Under Water Systems, Poole Farm, Building Resilience in Communities, Hydro Energy Group, and Nevada Construction. These organisations are showcasing their work through interactive, hands-on activities, providing young attendees with real-world insights into STEAM-related (science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths) careers.

Bridging Education and Industry

Councillor Sally Cresswell, Cabinet member for Education, Skills and Apprenticeships at Plymouth City Council, highlights the significance of this event:

“The Big Splash event offers a unique opportunity for young people to explore the exciting world of the blue and green economy, offering them a glimpse into future career possibilities and the critical role of STEAM in solving local, national, and global challenges such as tackling the climate emergency, sustainability, and net zero. We thank our local employers for facilitating these inspiring hands-on activities, helping us to pro-actively bridge the gap between education and industry, whilst also nurturing the important skills of problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.”

Exploring Green and Blue Careers

Green careers encompass roles that contribute to preserving or restoring the environment. These opportunities span all sectors and are integral to building a sustainable future, resonating deeply with young people’s passions for environmental stewardship.

Blue careers focus on our connection with the ocean, emphasising marine conservation and sustainable practices. Plymouth, with over 300 marine-related businesses, offers a plethora of opportunities in research, innovation, and cutting-edge technology.
